Our History

swara began with a spark of inspiration to create a place where every person, regardless of ability, could feel valued, respected and free to shine in their own way.

The beginning of swara

In 1975, twin sisters Moyia and Dorothy O’Brien, affectionately known as the pink twins for their matching pastel outfits and irrepressible warmth, opened the doors to something new in Spring Hill,Brisbane. As occupational therapists, they had seen how many people with disabilities were excluded from everyday life. Too often, these individuals were forgotten, left without community, purpose or opportunity. The sisters imagined a different way, a place where people could belong, learn, and experience the joy of being truly seen. With no government funding and little more than determination, they transformed an old cottage on a derelict block into a vibrant hub of hope and creativity. They called it ‘swara’ – the Sunshine Welfare and Remedial Association – a name that captured their belief that sunshine means energy, light and love.

Carrying the flame forward

Now a registered NDIS provider, swara continues our mission by helping people of all abilities build skills, friendships and independence. What began as a dream in a small Brisbane cottage has become a thriving community hub filled with colour, creativity, and connection.

At swara, the legacy of the pink twins isn’t just remembered, it’s lived, every day, in every smile, shared meal, and achievement celebrated together.

The legacy lives on

Today, swara stands as a living tribute to two women who dared to see people differently, not for what they couldn’t do, but for the light they carried within. Their message still guides us:

    • that love can be expressed through action,
    • and that when people are given the chance to belong, their potential shines.

At swara today, that light burns brighter than ever.

swara is a welcoming place where you can try new things, discover your strengths, and feel supported every step of the way.
