Support Independent Living (SIL) FAQs

What is the difference between In Home Support and SIL?

In-Home Support provides flexible, day-to-day assistance. SIL is designed for people who need ongoing or 24/7 support
to live safely and independently in their own home.

What is Supported Independent Living?

Supported Independent Living (SIL) provides NDIS funding for daily living support and personal care, such as cooking, cleaning, and medication management, helping individuals live as independently as possible.

What does SIL cover?

SIL funding covers the cost of paid support workers to assist with daily routines, personal care (showering, dressing), attending medical appointments and community participation, behavioural support, social skill development, and skill-building.

SIL funding does not cover the cost of housing or everyday living expenses. You cannot use SIL funding for rent or mortgage payments, groceries, dining out, household bills, or personal items.

Can I live alone or do I have to share to receive SIL support?

You can receive SIL support whether you live alone, or you choose to live in shared accommodation with other people with a disability.

Can I choose who to live with?

If you have funding for a shared living arrangement, you can have input into the housemates you live with. It is important to find housemates with similar routines, lifestyles and goals.

Can friends and family visit me?

Of course! It’s encouraged to have friends and family visit as often as you like.

What happens if my SIL support needs change?

NDIS Plans are flexible so if your needs changes, your NDIS plan can be reviewed, and support hours adjusted accordingly. This ensures you get the right level of SIL support.

What is the difference between SIL and SDA?

Supported Independent Living (SIL) is funding for the actual care and support staff provided to assist you with daily living tasks.

Specialist Disability Accommodation (SDA) is funding for the physical accommodation (house, unit, townhouse or apartment), specifically designed for people with high support needs. SIL supports can be delivered in a private home or in a SDA home.

How do I access SIL funding?

To access SIL funding, you will need to discuss your goals and living preferences during your NDIS planning meeting, and have SIL funding included in your NDIS plan.
